    Just a quick Wednesday thought Grief is something that has touched all of us, or will. It is an unavoidable part of the human experience.

    As such a normal part of the human experience, it's no surprise that it shows up in my office. Specifically younger people 20's's who have lost someone significant, OR those who are grieving and recovering from trauma connected to the loss.

    Here's the thing I've noticed. But as I get to know them their anxiety or stress level or depression ends up being connected to a loss that they didn't originally mention when setting up the appointment. In our American society we don't leave a lot of room for grief. Sure, people show up at the beginning What do you say after one week, one month, one year, five years.

    Americans are optimistic and like to look on the bright side - to "pull ourselves up by our bootstraps. But when it comes to grief, it can often cut the grieving process off short. This is particularly the case with younger people whose peers may not have experienced much loss. I'm not repeating this verbatim in order to protect privacy, but here's the gist of what I've heard grieving clients say: But it seems like everyone thinks I am.

    I don't want to make anyone feel awkward. The loss is difficult enough without the complication of worrying about how to grieve and what's appropriate to show to others. I'm also linking to a beautiful passage by Elizabeth Gilbert on grief and a link to "what to say to a grieving friend" so that we can all try to do better.

    I'm always happy to share a referral if anyone is in need. Something I haven't written a lot about, is the work I do with clients to help them reconnect to their intuition.

    I see a split from intuition quite a bit in my practice, and it is a common cause for a lot of pain and discomfort in life. This might sound a little vague or woo-woo, but bear with me. Disconnect from intuition impacts decision making. Another good example of this is in relationships. There may be a relationship that is just not working. It's causing the you a ton of pain and stress. You may not be able to hear this voice, perhaps because of anxiety, stress and a lack of time to reflect OR you hear it loud and clear, but it's SCARY and you are ignoring it on purpose.

    Does this sound familiar? When intuition isn't in the driver seat, decisions become very difficult. Or go back and forth, back and forth before deciding. Accepting a job offer is a big decision, so is ending a relationship. It is understandable that this won't be easy, but it can be more stress-free if intuition is guiding. For some people, even the most simple call may cause a lot of frustration and the person may experience ambivalence and stress - it can become a tug of war of the mind - a negotiation or debate, rather than a felt sense that "this is right for me.

    A person may revisit the same discomfort around a job to stick with the above examples or the same question of "is this relationship right for me" over and over and over again. If they aren't exploring the gut feeling that is nagging them, they will keep revisiting this crossroads. And that is painful! Reconnecting to intuition is a common goal for therapy in my practice.

    In doing this work, we talk about trees a lot, ha! The roots of trees are deep and strong and grounded. They aren't swayed by the wind. When a client is deliberating or wrestling with an issue, we have a sense if they are like the branches, unsteady and easily influenced OR if they are coming at the issue from a grounded, rooted, intuitive place.

    I don't know how else to describe it, but it's very clear in the work. For those that are really struggling to tap into intuition, we start with awareness. This is something you might try on your own, simply increasing awareness. Maybe the person is able to say - something is telling me not to take this job, or something is telling me to leave my relationship.

    That's a great starting place! We are expanding our team so that we can reach more of you. If our practices are momentarily full, you will be able to meet with other amazing therapists who we have vetted.

    There will also be more opportunities for you to join workshops or groups we will be offering in the community. You know how when you are knowledgeable about something, you develop a shorthand way of talking about it.

    Or you find yourself describing the same concept in the same way because you've found that it really clicks with people? That happens with me as a therapist too. There are certain ways of talking about anxiety - what it is, and how to alleviate it - that just seem to make sense to most people, and so I find myself using the analogy or metaphor over and over again. This comes up often when I'm trying to explain mindfulness in session.

    Mindfulness has definitely become a buzz word, and sometimes clients tune out or disengage if I simply suggest a mindfulness practice or ask if they have one.
